Issue #11 - The Creator Business Model

Read Time - 5 Minutes

If you've been around long enough you've heard me use the term - Creator Business.

I understand that this might be a new term for you, which is why in today's email I am going to answer the question:

Hey, Abraham… What is a Creator Business?”

Who knows, this might be the business model you didn’t know you were looking for.

The Creator Business Model

What is a Creator Business?

A creator business is an Internet Business that revolves around a person who builds deep expertise on one topic, creates content on social media around that topic, builds an audience that is interested in that topic, and sells products and services related to that topic.

The Creator, The Content, And The Audience

In the creator business model, the creator is the face of the business. He/she is the person leading people toward a better future.

The content is what he/she uses to get known, develop trust and build an audience.

The audience is the sum of all of the people who tune in and pay attention to the creator.

Expertise

For a creator business to be profitable and successful, the creator needs to be an expert at the thing he/she creates content on. This expertise is what leads to trust in the creator and the sales of products and services later down the road. I think it’s important to make a note here - expertise is perceptually-relative. To a child who doesn't know how to tie his shoes an adult who does is an expert. Expertise can also be built relatively quickly. Reading the top 20 books on a subject will put you in the top 5% of experts on that subject in no time.

Alignment

In a Creator Business, you are building a business around your personal brand. Because of this, there must be congruence between who you are, what you are going to sell, and your audience.

Without this alignment, there is no trust and without trust people won’t want to engage with your content or buy your products & services.

Here’s an example of a personal brand that is not in alignment:

An office worker, who builds an audience around entrepreneurship and sells a product on how to lose weight.

Here’s an example of a personal brand that is in alignment:

A fitness trainer who is fit, builds an audience around fitness and sells a product on how to transform your body in 12 weeks.

The Products & Services

In a Creator Business, the products and services are what the creator uses to monetize his audience. These will more often than not, be related to the subject matter the creator is an expert on and will help his audience achieve a specific outcome.

Examples Of Specific Outcomes: Make more money, handle emotions better, start a new career path, invest more intelligently, grow on social media, get fit and healthy, etc.

Is This The Right Business Model For You?

The truth is that I can't make that judgment for you, but I can tell you that if:

  • Your soul craves freedom
  • You have a high level of integrity
  • You are a naturally curious person
  • You enjoy learning, growing, and teaching
  • You can self-direct and manage yourself and your time
  • You are not afraid to try things out and get your hands dirty
  • The idea of working from your phone & laptop is attractive to you

Then this could very well be the business model for you.

Now if you think making money at all costs is okay, are looking to "get rich quick" expect things to be easy, and have nothing of value to offer the world... Please stay away from this type of business. We don't need more people like you in our industry.

Why I love Creator Businesses

I could write a whole essay on this subject... but for me, it comes down to four things:

  • Impact: I get to change lives, mindsets, and bank accounts with my business.
  • Sovereignty: I have supreme power and authority over how I live my life.
  • Creative Autonomy: I get to explore my curiosities and get paid for doing so.
  • Freedom: I can work on whatever, wherever, whenever, with whoever.
